Nurse costumes, like the nurse outfits, have been around a long time. For years nurses wore just white (for cleanliness) uniforms, but the nurse costumes are a lot sexier and more brightly colored.

After the white outfits came the age of scrubs. Scrubs are outfits of pants and a top that are worn in surgery. This time they started out in a simple green color. Since they fit so much looser on the body and far more comfortable than wearing those white nurse dresses, nurses began wearing them out on the floor.

As far as a nurse outfit being a costume for Halloween or a masquerade party, those costumes once again started out as the plain white dresses that nurses wore. They also wore small white nurse caps, sometimes bobby pinned to their hair. In other words they went to costumes parties dressed like a nurse would like at work.

Just as those nurse’s white dresses were replaced with scrubs, so were the costumes that many women wore when they went dressed as nurses. Since many were nurses by profession, they just went out dressed in their work clothes.

But fashion and Hollywood enhanced our perceptions of what a good fantasy should be like. Soon, the crazy, evil nurse arrived on the costume scene and close on its heels were the sexy nurse costumes.

Dressing as a naughty nurse became a fantasy for not only many women, but many men liked that look so much and had fantasies of being with a sexy, naughty nurse that they encouraged their wives and girlfriends to dress as a sexy nurse.

So what should you wear if you want to dress in a nurse costume this year? You can always wear scrubs, all nurse-clothing store carry them, but that’s so boring and unimaginative when so many cool and sexy costumes are available.

If you’d like to go dressed as a nurse,but don’t want to be too risque, there are outfits that are more professional looking. Something you could wear to work for Halloween or to a party where you wanted to be on the conservative.

How did nursing begin? Well, people acting in nurse-like situations have been around ever since people have needed help convalescing or recovering from ailments, wounds or childbirth. Besides helping in childbirth, nuns and the military often provided services for people needing medical care.

But it was the European Crimean War fought in the 1850’s where Florence Nightingale worked to help improve the conditions of wounded soldiers that the foundation stone for professional nursing was first laid.

The nursing field has since bloomed into a field with many types of nurse. Just to name a few, there are registered nurses, nurse practitioners, rehab nurses, geriatric nurses, nurse oncologist, nurse anesthesiologist and a whole lot more.
